Chicago (pronounced shi-cah-go, or shi-caw-go) is the largest city in the state of Illinois, the largest in the Midwest and, with a population of nearly 2.9 million people, is the third largest in the United States. The City of Chicago is almost entirely located in Cook County, Illinois, with a small portion in DuPage County, while the metropolitan area extends over several counties.
Things to do... Six Flags Great America is at the top of the “must see” list for most families. Wild rollercoaster rides like Superman: The Ultimate Flight allows teens (and kids at heart) to soar through the sky like the man of steel.
Raining? Museum It!... Teen-friendly museums abound in Chicago. The Museum of Science and Industry has exhibits to fascinate the entire family including such diverse material as the pyramids, Star Wars technology, and the impact of Hurricane Katrina on the bayou. Other museums, such as the Notebaert Nature Museum, are dedicated to nature. Wherever your family’s interests lay, Chicago has a museum that will satisfy.
Time for Grub... Food is an essential part of any vacation. There are various ethnic neighborhoods that offer fairly priced traditional restaurants immersed in a cultural atmosphere. On the west side, Humboldt Park is home to a strong Puerto Rican community. Little Italy and Greektown are both located near the University of Illinois at Chicago campus. There are numerous eateries that are friendly to the budget as well as the family. For Italian food, Buca di Beppo has been a local family eatery. Shop ‘Till You Drop... Chicago Michigan Avenue is truly a shopper’s paradise. Imagine a street packed with your favorite stores bursting at the seams full of quality merchandise. Look no further than this historic street dubbed the “Magnificent Mile.”
