Lincoln Park is the oldest zoo in the U.S. and is also
one of the nation's last admission free zoos. Besides these facts, the zoo is only
major Chicago cultural institution that does not charge admission.
The zoo is home to more than 1,100 mammals, reptiles and
birds residing on 35 acres of the city's beautiful lakefront. and attracts more
than 3 million visitors each year. The Lincoln Park zoo was Founded in 1874 with
the $10 purchase of a single bear cub and subsequently acquired more animals from Barnum and Bailey Circus.
In 1990 the zoo saw the birth of it's first elephant,
Shanti. The zoo was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994
