Ave. between E 22nd St. and E 18th St.
Chicago Prairie Avenue Historic District allows visitors
of all ages to experience life in Chicago during a simpler time. This opulent district
served as home to some of Chicago’s most elite residents, including shopping magnet
Marshall Field and the famous Phillip Armour, patriarch of one of the country’s
foremost meat companies.
These grand citizens bedecked this fabled area of the
city with grand estates and palatial buildings of unbelievable proportions. This
area of Chicago has seen its heyday and its once beautiful streets and buildings
have been in slow decline. The beautiful neighborhood is under rejuvenation, as
historical foundations attempt to undo the effects of time and restore the luster
and beauty of the past.
Upon visiting Chicago’s Prairie Avenue Historic District,
adults and children alike will be taken aback by the majesty and grandeur still
evident in the neighborhood. It is like taking a trip back in time when the city
was younger and the residents were legendary. Be sure to check out the Glessner
House Museum to see this lovely district from the inside. If time permits, elect
to go on a tour led by the Chicago Architecture Foundation. The stories and history
behind this interesting neighborhood will capture the minds and imaginations of
Chicago visitors of all ages.
