World Music Festival is happening all around the Chicagoland area. From Grant Park to Wicker Park, there is a musical genre to appease any discerning taste. The seventh annual, heart felt show goes amuck on Friday and the music keeps on playing through Thursday.
In commemoration of the Mexican Independence Day, it’s Mexican night on Friday where Waldemar Bastos will be performing a passionate set of Brazilian and Portuguese musical influences. Bastos performance at Millennium Park will be simulcast on WBEZ radio 91.7.
The festival will showcase a week-long of both contemporary and traditional music compilations from all over the world from India, Israel, Brazil, France, Palestine, Canada and other countries. On Saturday, at Navy Pier (4 pm), a powerful step dancing debut will be sweeping the stage with the rhythms that represent the Acadian culture of Eastern Canada.
There is a mélange of free and affordable priced concerts. Many of the shows will air on live radio. Music historian buffs should not miss the educational workshops that will be presented at the Old Town School of Folk Music, the Chicago Cultural Center, Under the Picasso at the Daley Civic Center, the Museum of Contemporary Art and an array of other performance venues around Chicago.
For the grand finale, there will be a serious wrangle-tango with the acoustic Nordic sounds of Frigg. A fusion of Finland and Norway meets American Appalachian will end at the World of Festivals at the Chicago Cultural Center on Thursday 22nd (6pm-9pm).
Event Tip: Since the World Music Festival 2005 takes place at over 10 venues, be sure to double check the times and locations so you won’t miss any shows.
